Discussion:
how to reduce EPS file size

Hello,

I am using gnuplot for making some figures for publication.
The figures are in the EPS format. They consist of large numbers
of x-y data points, each represented by a little cross. Owing to the
large number of the crosses, concentrated in some places,
the EPS files obtained have a large size, reaching several megabytes.
Is there any gnuplot option allowing one to reduce
the size of the files? I am thinking of some sort of
packing or data filtering that eliminates superimposed
pixels that are effectively excessive, taking into account the typical
resolution of the figures.

L.B.

Not for scatter plots. If you want to condense your data file, you'll
have to do it outside gnuplot.

Other options would include changing the type of plot. E.g. you could
do a pm3d plot of a 2D histogram of your input. For truly
high-density scattered data, that tends to be a lot more expressive
and readable than a direct scatter plot.
